The RN Program
  • There are classroom (lectures, discussion, seminar) activities as well as clinical (hospital, clinic, daycare) hours in the RN Program
  • Formal acceptance to the RN Program is required before you can enroll in any nursing (NUR) courses.

What is an R.N.???
  • R. N. stands for Registered Nurse

  • A Registered Nurse is a valuable member of the health care team that uses critical thinking, assessment skills and organizational skills to care for patients of all ages
7
The title “RN”
  • Can only be used after completion of a nursing program and successful testing on the national licensing examination (NCLEX-RN)

Nursing - A Career
  • Nursing requires that you keep up on changes in healthcare, so nursing involves lifelong learning

  • Hospitals are always open so Registered Nurses work all shifts (day, evenings, and nights) and even work on holidays
10
Nursing is Challenging
  • Nursing is both mentally and physically challenging
  • Nurses must constantly think, problem solve, assess patients and situations
  • Nurses must be able to lift patients, help them move, and perform other physical tasks
11
Comfort Around Others
  • Nurses do have to work VERY closely with others
  • You need to be able to relax and work in close quarters with others
12
A Nursing Career
  • Can be satisfying and fun
  • Gives you the chance to work in different types of specialty areas (cardiac care, emergency care, pediatrics-children, obstetrics-maternity, surgical nursing)
  • Gives you the chance to make a difference in the lives of others
13
Another Level of Nursing
  • Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN)
  • LPN training usually takes 11 months and students must then pass a licensing examination
  • An LPN must work under the direction of an RN or MD
  • LPN’s are not allowed to do all the skills and procedures that RN’s do
