Tigers Come Up Short During Opener with East Central
DECATUR — It was a season-opening loss, but Coahoma Community College’s Head Basketball Coach Ira Peterson took away some positive vibes from his team’s eight-point loss Monday night at Brackeen –Wood Gymnasium on the campus of East Central Mississippi Community College.
Peterson’s young squad got off to quick start, opening up a six-point lead early in the first half, however, inexperience got the best of them, and some streaky play — both good and bad — led to the eventual loss.
“We played hard, and we played well defensively when they got into their half court set, we were pleased with the effort and the intensity,” said CCC Head Coach Ira Peterson. “But we were outrebounded, and that’s something that we are going to have to pay attention to. The more we play this season, the more experience we get, we are going to become a good basketball team.”
Sophomore Billy Jackson led the Tigers with 13 points and sophomore Markevius Brown added 11. Sophomore Darcee Carson netted 9 points, and Freshman Robert Jordan contributed 7.
In addition to being outrebounded, the Tigers also didn’t capitalize on their trips to the foul line, something that could’ve tipped the game in CCC’s favor.
“Like any young team, we’re going to have to learn how to finish ballgames,” said Peterson, “and we’ve got to continue to get even better defensively, but the biggest thing we’ve got to do is work on how to finish strong and get better with our free throw shooting.”
The Tigers shot 50 percent from the charity stripe Monday night hitting 13-of-26 free throw attempts.
But despite the loss, Peterson saw some good things during the game, some streaky moments of brilliance that gave him confidence that with more experience; the Tigers will be a tough team to contend with.
“We got out on a good run, I believe we started 6-0, and we had some stretches where you could see that this is going to be a really good basketball team, but we also had some stretches where you could tell that we were not there mentally. And, every time we had one of those stretches, they capitalized.”
The Tigers hit the hardwood again this week when they travel to Southern University for the Southern University Classic being held Nov. 8-9.
