Overnight event scheduled July 23,24
CLARKSDALE – When 250 new students and their parents arrive for Summer Orientation at Coahoma Community College July 23-24, they’ll be greeted with a spicy Mexican-style welcome.
“Sombreros, piñatas, and garlands of chili pepper lights will be decorating the Student Union,” says LaShasa Griffin, dean of student affairs and student support services.
Although the event is designed for first-time freshmen and answers many practical questions about the transition into college, it also includes fun activities, says Griffin.
“CCC staffers will be wearing South-of-the-Border attire, and the Thursday evening party will feature Mexican-style music, entertainment, and salsa-flavored snacks,” she continues.
Griffin says approximately 200 including parents attended the 2008 orientation, and many stayed overnight in dorms to experience the safe environment of CCC campus life.
Special sessions are designed for parents and address questions and concerns about admissions, academics, housing, financial aid, fees, expenses, student life, athletics, student health, and insurance.
In order to register for fall classes at the end of the second day, students are required to attend all scheduled events, according to Griffin.
July 8 is the deadline for early registration. For additional information, call 662-621-4155.
