Grads urged to view GED as ‘stepping stone’

Coahoma honors 76 at Sunday commencement

CLARKSDALE – Mortar boards soared high in the Pinnacle Sunday afternoon after 76 graduates of Coahoma Community College’s Adult Basic Education program received their General Equivalency Diplomas (GED) before an audience of 500 educators, families, and friends.

According to Coahoma’s ABE director Cremaya Wilson, the 2008-2009 GED graduating class totals 194.

“Don’t let the GED be a stopping stone but a stepping stone,” said commencement speaker Eloise Richardson, state director of ABE/Literacy and GED testing for the state Board of Community Colleges.

“There is a place for you now at Coahoma Community College,” she said. “You have already proved that you can make any of your dreams come true.”

Richardson encouraged graduates to recruit new students for the GED program through word of mouth.

A Mississippi State University graduate with three degrees, Richardson was introduced by her son Sean Johnson who said his mother rarely made public addresses but was a person with strong passion for undereducated adults.

Johnson is administrator of the Quitman County Medical Center.

Recognizing graduates and their families and announcing that each graduate will receive free tuition for one semester at CCC, Dr. Vivian Presley, college president, said, “This is no ordinary task; be proud.”

Also congratulating the group was Charles (Checo) White, director of the CCC Workforce Development Center. Steven Jossell gave the invocation, and Afissata Waters welcomed the audience.
