East Mississippi claims two victories over CCC

CLARKSDALE – East Mississippi claimed two victories on the road over Coahoma Community College here Monday with the Lady Lions defeating a competitive Lady Tiger team 79-56, and the Lions winning a 93-67 controversial battle peppered with technical fouls.

Although the seven CCC women faced 14 Lady Lions including a trio of too-tall 6-footers, they staged a scrappy game plan with Jonnetta Robinson’s key pass to Eureka Nunnally to tie at 8 followed by Malea Malone’s two free throws for a 10-8 lead.

Robinson’s triple tied at 13; and Nunnally’s trey briefly pushed the Lady Tigers out front 16-15.

With three minutes remaining in the half, Nunnally fired another triple to reduce CCC’s deficit 27-23, and at halftime East Mississippi was ahead 33-27.

A Nunnally rebound and three-pointer brought the Lady Tigers within three points (35-32) following intermission, and a triple by Kyla Winford continued CCC’s positive spin – down only 42-37.

Two baskets by Malone and Shereka Griffin, and a Malone free throw pushed Coahoma within two points (44-42).

However, CCC’s competitive engine slowed when Nunnally picked up her fourth foul with 10 minutes remaining, and Nakita Kimble was charged with her fourth at 1:36.

High scorer for Coahoma was Nunnally with 20 points; Malone with 11; Lisa de Ruijter, 8; Griffin, 6; Kimble and Winford, 4 each; and Robinson, 3.

Leading the scoring for East Mississippi was Martika Hull with 22 points; Jacquelyn Carouthers, 11; Shelby Crawford, 10; Rickiesha Bryant, 8; Rotasha Windom, 7; Natalie Tate and Nashedra Barry, 4 each; Shanteria Tate and Skylar Barnes, 3 each; Keyetta Buckhalter and Malashia Chandler, 2 each.

Opening the second game with a fast triple was Coahoma’s Tony Payne answered by points by East Mississippi’s Deonte Alexander and Terence Bennett.

CCC’s outside shots were not going down until Turio Tumblin tossed in a triple five minutes into the game.

Rebounds by Kelvin Miller, JaMarquis Lewis, and Tumblin led to a trey by Lewis to give Coahoma 11 points behind East Mississippi’s 12.

The Lions were successful boxing in CCC’s big guy, Kelvin Miller, and continued a steady stream of baskets via follow-up players tapping in missed first shots.

Although CCC’s Donteeno Todd and Payne both nailed triples before halftime, East Mississippi led 34-26 at intermission.

Double technical fouls, a technical on the CCC coach, and a fourth foul called on Lewis heated up the second half and contributed to Coahoma’s disjointed game plan with the Tigers suddenly down 53-38.

A steal, a triple, and two more points by Payne put them back on track (down 57-45) when Se’Marcio Bailey picked up his fourth foul.

Although East Mississippi’s 6-7-inch Marino Thompson fouled out, the Lions continued their sharpshooting expertise, and jumped far ahead.

High scorer for Coahoma was Payne with 24 points followed by Todd with 11; Miller with 8; Lewis and Bailey with 7 each; Roddick Brown, 6; and Tumblin, 4.

Scoring for East Mississippi were CoCo Ware with 30 points; Deonte Alexander, 20; Terence Bennett, 13; Jonathan King and Donovan Walker, both with 8 each; Marino Thompson, 6; John Harris, 4; Joe McCoy and Richard Dixon, 2 each.
