As a Coahoma Community College alumnus, Dr. Shirley Hall Edwards has a first-hand experience of the institution.

“Having received my first academics from Coahoma Community College, I believe CCC’s strength lies within the walls of its vision and mission,” said Edwards.

“The college’s priorities lie in the economic and social advancement of its students and in their preparation for career paths. Also, we have a distinguished faculty who are excellent instructors and enjoy instruction in their respective fields of study.”

Edwards joined CCC’s staff in 2005 and currently serves as the chairperson and instructor in CCC’s Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) department.

In addition, Edwards has coached girls’ basketball, softball, and track and field.

She received an associate’s degree from Coahoma Community College in 1979, a Bachelor of Science in HPER from LeMoyne Owen College in 1981, a Master of Education from Delta State University in 2000, and a Doctor of Philosophy from Capella University in 2010.

She is a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and her professional affiliations include the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance; the National Association for Sport and Physical Education; and the American College of Sports Medicine.

“As a instructor, the wisdom that I hope to impart to my students is that life is not about going in circles; it is about climbing up and becoming a better human. With education and knowledge, the sky is the limit,” said Edwards. “And, of course, use what you know for the good of all.”

In her own life, Edwards believes that she is “designed in the image of God” and therefore “will be who God designed her to be.”

Edwards also encourages others by reminding them to “don’t give up on life” and “be yourself.”

One of Edwards’ favorite quotes is: “People who say it cannot be done should not interrupt those who are doing it.”
