Vera S. Griffin, chair and instructor for CCC’s English and Foreign Language Department, is among those committed to creating a positive, educational environment at Coahoma Community College.

“The greatest strength of Coahoma is that those employed by the college are committed to improving the quality of life of those it serves by providing the best education opportunities possible,” said Griffin.

Griffin began her own college career at CCC, receiving an Associate of Arts degree in Elementary Education, followed by a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Jackson State University and a Master of Arts degree in English Literature from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.

As an instructor, Griffin encourages her students to achieve academic success.

“I believe that students can learn. Thus, I hope to enhance students’ confidence by encouraging them to preserve in completing their work in a timely and exceptional manner,” said Griffin. “Because I am an optimistic person, I strive to find students’ attributes and build upon them.”

As a result of her dedication, Griffin has been recognized as the Humanities Teacher of the Year award and has been a past recipient of Higher Education Appreciation Day Working For Academic Excellence (HEADWAE).

She also strives to achieve excellence each day in her own life.

“I believe that each morning when the sun comes up and I am able to come to work I have another opportunity to have a meaningful impact on someone,” she says. “I strive to do my best each day.”

Griffin enjoys reading and her favorite books are Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Are Watching God, Richard Wright’s Native Son, and the Bible.

Griffin also enjoys spending time with family and friends, going to the movies, attending church, playing games and travelling.

She finds inspiration in the Bible verses: “All things work together for the good of those that love God” and “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.”
