October Activities

During the month of October, CCC Fit for Life is proud to participate in National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is the second most common kind of cancer in women. About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point.  According to John Hopkins Medicine and the National Cancer Institute, there are guidelines to healthy eating for prevention and recurrence of cancer.

“There are no food or dietary supplements that will act as “magic bullets” to prevent breast cancer from returning. National Cancer Institute guidelines for cancer prevention can be used to decrease the chance of a breast cancer recurrence. These guidelines include:

  • Increase intake of fruits, vegetables and whole grains
  • Decrease fat intake to less than 30 percent of calories
  • Minimize intake of cured, pickled and smoked foods
  • Achieve and maintain a healthy weight
  • Alcohol consumption should be done in moderation, if at all.”

The good news is that most women can survive breast cancer if it’s found and treated early.

  • If you are a woman age 40 to 49, talk with your doctor about when to start getting mammograms and how often to get them.
  • If you are a woman age 50 to 74, be sure to get a mammogram every 2 years. You may also choose to get them more often.

Talk to a doctor about your risk for breast cancer, especially if a close family member of yours had breast or ovarian cancer. Your doctor can help you decide when and how often to get mammograms.

  • On October 24th, 2017, at 3:30 PM, there will be a 2k walk around the fitness trail in honor of those who have survived breast cancer and for those who would like to honor loved ones who have died from breast cancer.
  • On October 25th, 2017, there will be an information table placed in Coahoma Community College’s Student Union filled with information about breast cancer awareness, prevention, and screening locations.
  • On October 26th, 2017, there will be an “Drink Pink” event that will include a pink lemonade stand setup during lunch time.  This lemonade will have a healthier sweetener than refined sugar, due to our conscious efforts to combat illnesses through proper nutrition.
