MATH AND SCIENCE ENRICHMENT PROGRAM ENDS WITH A BLAST!!
June 17 – 30th provided the experience of a lifetime for thirty middle-school aged students. As a component of the Math and Science Enrichment Program, these students were taken on a trip to Orlando, FL. While in Orlando, students visited the Kennedy Space Center, Botanical Gardens, and Jungle Adventures.

At the Kennedy Space Center, students had the opportunity to tour various exhibits and facilities related to the history of space exploration, participate in a space shuttle simulation flight, and have lunch with an astronaut.

The Botanical Gardens offered the students and chaperones a nice relaxing environment. The many flowers, gardens, and beautiful landscape are rich in history.

Jungle Adventures was a culturally, enriching, outdoor activity filled with excitement and adventure. Students took a boat ride down the swamp in search of alligators, learned about different kinds of animals, and learned how the Native Americans have impacted the city of Orlando.

If you missed this trip, you definitely missed a treat! Hope to see ya’ next year.

SUMMER RESIDENCY PROGRAMS 2009 END WITH TRIP TO CDC!
On June 24-28, 2009, thirty-five area high school juniors and seniors completed the summer component of the Summer Residency Program with a trip to Atlanta, Georgia. The interns visited Emory University, the Northside Sleep Center, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Georgia Aquarium.

The Residency interns visited the Emory University School of Nursing to discuss admissions requirements with faculty and staff. Interns also had an opportunity to meet and talk with students who are currently enrolled in Emory’s School of Nursing.

While at the Northside Sleep Center, interns were given an overview of various sleep disorders and the methods of treating such disorders. In addition, interns participated in a demonstration of robotic surgery technology. It is amazing how medical technology has advanced over the last decades!

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) afforded interns the opportunity to gain an understanding of some past and current health issues that plague the world and the people who work so hard to preserve the health of our nation.

Finally, residency interns spent Saturday morning on an adventure into the DEEP BLUE SEAS at the Georgia Aquarium. The interns saw hundreds of fishes in all different kinds of habitats. How relaxing!!! You absolutely have to join us next year.
