Coahoma Community College’s Mississippi Delta Alliance: Strengthening and Enriching Allied Health Programs (STEAP) is a community-based job training project funded by the United States Department of Labor and focuses on strengthening the healthcare workforce.
This project allows Coahoma Community College to provide high quality training and capacity building programs designed to help alleviate the health and economic conditions of the Mississippi Delta. The project’s primary strategy is to establish an allied health residency program.
Through this program, high school juniors will receive high quality classroom instruction and clinical training related to four specific allied health careers: Associate Degree Nursing, Licensed Practical Nursing, Phlebotomy/EKG Technician, and Respiratory Therapy. Additionally, funds have been awarded to Coahoma Community College to purchase simulation equipment which will aid in reinforcing theories and practices discussed during instructional time.
The MS. Delta Alliance STEAP also provides dual enrollment opportunities for Allied Health Residency students so that they can get a head start on completing prerequisite requirements for healthcare programs.
In addition to the above mentioned strategies and training programs, the grant will also provide funding for Coahoma Community College’s annual health care conference. The conference serves as a platform to discuss current health care issues that are common to the Mississippi Delta as well as introduce effective prevention and intervention strategies aimed at reducing the health disparities among citizens in the Mississippi Delta.
