Lady Tigers Get First Win During Southern University Classic
SHREVEPORT — The Lady Tigers picked up their first win this season Saturday night during the Southern University Classic hosted by Southern University at Shreveport. Coahoma rebounded from a pretty rough loss against Arkansas Baptist in the first round Friday night and pulled out a barn-burning victory against host SUSLA in their Saturday game.
The Lady Tigers led at the half, 36-34, led by Ashley Smith and Amber Sisk who scored eight and 10 points respectively. Sisk got hot early connecting on three, 3-pointers early to help boost the Tigers. But during the second-half Smith, a 6-foot forward from Falcon, MS, took control down low pumping in another 14 points during the second half and leading the Lady Tigers to victory.
“(Smith) crashes the boards and has a light touch around the basket,” said Lady Tigers’ head coach LaCole Brooks. “She gets a lot of offensive rebounds and a lot of put backs and always seems to be around the ball.
“Right now, we’re playing one good half, then one bad half; one really solid game and one bad game, But we’re gelling together, but we still have to tighten up. Our decision-making has to improve and defense has to continue to get better. If we can do those two things, we are going to have a pretty fun season.”
An interesting stat during CCC’s first win, the Lady Tigers shot just 10-of-26 from the line; including a 4-of-12 effort in the second half, while SUSLA hit 19-of-22 from the foul line; including 14-of-16 in the second half.
Sisk finished the contest scoring 14, with Shontrell Williams adding 10 and Josta Totten finishing with 8.
In the Friday’s matchup, Coahoma (1-2) faced off with Arkansas Baptist. The Lady Tigers fell behind early, 37-14, and couldn’t regroup eventually dropping their second consecutive game, 76-43.
Smith scored 12 points in the loss with Aaliyah Irby adding 10.
The Lady Tigers next game will be their home-opener Monday night at the Pinnacle when they will play host to East Central Mississippi Community College. Coahoma lost their season-opener on the road at ECMCC, 64-44.
The Lady Tigers controlled the first half tempo and kept pace with East Central in the opener, slowing the ball down and not allowing ECMCC to run and score in transition. But, in the second half, the Lady Tigers fell off of their game plan and were outscored 36-20 in the second half.
“We’re going to have to put two halves together, and slow the tempo of the game down,” said Brooks. “We’re not disciplined enough to run the floor with them. If we have a fast break, we’ll run it, but we don’t want them fast breaking against us, we tend to get into foul trouble. We’re going to have to try and control the tempo.”
Tip-off for the Lady Tigers home opener is 6 p.m., Monday evening. All students are asked to wear white during the scheduled white out, and the first 100 non-student fans through the door will receive a white Coahoma Tigers T-shirt.
