Tigers Win One; Lose One at Southern University Classic
SHREVEPORT — With the game tied and the clock winding down, Coahoma Community College appeared to be headed into overtime in its second game of the Southern University Classic held last weekend against Bossier Paris Community College. But a huge defensive play from the Tigers’ Darcee Carson, and outlet pass to Billy Jackson for a game-winning layup, propelled CCC to its first victory of the season, 88-86.
Carson had the hot hand for Coahoma scoring 15 second-half points, and a total of 25, to lead the Tigers. Jackson and Markevius Brown also had a big night each pouring in 14, and AlDario Alexander added 11.
Brown hit four, 3-pointers on the night with Jackson chipping in two.
“We had a 10-point lead with about 5:00 to play and (BPCC) started knocking down some shots and made things a lot closer,” said Coahoma Head Coach Ira Peterson. “But this was the first game for us that we were really hitting our shots, it was our best shooting performance.”
The Tigers (1-2) converted 15-of-19 free throws in the win; 14-of-18 in the second half to help themselves hang on for the win.
“We’re still an inexperienced team, and we will continue to get better the more games that we play,” said Peterson. “At times, our inexperience shows and we lose focus, and at other times we’re showing flashes of brilliance both defensively and offensively. We’ve just got to keep our focus and play complete games.”
In the tournament opener against Southern University of Shreveport, the Tigers kept thing close throughout the first half and deep into the second. But with about 5:00 minutes remaining, SUSLA began to heat up from the floor, forcing CCC to foul and send the Jaguars to the line where they converted 11-of-13 in the second half from the charity stripe to keep CCC at arm’s length.
The Tigers would eventually lose their second game to start the season, 84-64.
Tip-off for the Tigers home opener is scheduled at the conclusion of the Lady’s game that begins at 6 p.m., Monday evening at the Pinnacle. All students are asked to wear white during the scheduled white out, and the first 100 non-student fans through the door will receive a white Coahoma Tigers T-shirt.
