Coahoma Male Initiative Sponsoring Toy Drive
The Coahoma Male initiative of Coahoma Community College is sponsoring a Toy Drive all next week (Nov. 18-22) with proceeds going to benefit the Coahoma Opportunities Incorporated Head Start Program. The organization and its 120-plus members will be working hard and soliciting toys for children ages 3 to 5-years-old that will be used to brighten the Holiday Season of the young students.
“We’re just trying to make a difference, we know that not everyone is as fortunate as we are and we want to try and help put some smiles on some kids faces,” said CM Vice President Rodrick McKee. “We want to go out and visit with them, offer some encouraging words and just reach out and help in the community.”
The group will be collecting gifts in the Student Union, and will deliver them Friday afternoon to Head Start. After the Thanksgiving Holiday, the men will return to head start for a Holiday Party featuring Santa Claus who will be handing out the gifts.
The Coahoma Male program was started in 2011 with the goal providing retention services to male students at CCC. The organization sponsors programs and events throughout the year aimed at increasing the probability of members matriculating to graduation by eliminating potential barriers to success.
It encourages high academic achievement, leadership and the character development while developing a successful student that motivates his peers through their personal conduct and actions. With the motto, “Learn as one, Lead as One, Graduate as one,” the organization is one of the fastest growing groups on campus.
