Tigers Earn First Conference Win Monday on the Road at Holmes

GOODMAN, MS — The Coahoma Community College men’s basketball team picked up its first MACJC North win of the season Monday night with an exciting 67-63 win on the road against Holmes.

The Tigers, led by 14 points from Billy Jackson (Tunica, MS) and 13 points Darcee Carson (Cleveland, MS), battled back from a five-point halftime deficit outscoring the Bulldogs by nine in the second half to pull out the win.

It was a huge confidence boost for the Tigers, who were returning to MACJC action after suffering two tough non-conference losses last week.

Coahoma was playing their best basketball of the season right before the Christmas Holiday break, and the month-long layoff seemed to throw the Tigers out of their rhythm. But Monday night’s win was a complete game, and the type of performance Head coach Ira Peterson expects from his team.

“During both of our first two games after the break, I think that we improved a little bit during each one, and (against Holmes) we finally put two halves together,” said Peterson. “We didn’t quit, we played hard and fought until the end.”

The Tigers couldn’t have picked a better time to start firing on all cylinders. On Saturday, alumni from all over the country will return to the Coahoma campus to take part in the basketball Homecoming weekend. CCC will welcome area and MACJC North rival Mississippi Delta to the Pinnacle for what is expected to be an exciting conference matchup.

The Tigers’ (1-2 MACJC North 3-10 overall) next nine games are all against MACJC North opponents, and a good run to finish the season could have the Tigers vying for a conference playoff spot.

“We are hoping that this momentum from our first conference win will carry over,” said Peterson. “Homecoming is always a big deal here on campus, it’s a great time for alumni to come and watch us play and we always have a big crowd. This year we have the added excitement of playing Mississippi Delta and we’re looking forward to a tough game — they have a strong team.”

Lady Tigers 59, Holmes 81

Ariel Jones and Gabrielle Gilbert each poured in 16 points Monday night but the Lady Tigers came up on the short end in their conference matchup with Holmes on the road Monday night.

Gilbert also added nine rebounds (seven offensive) while scoring nearly half her points from the foul line converting 7-of-12 from the charity stripe.

The big stat of the game was that the Lady Bulldogs tallied 18, second-chance points despite being outrebounded by the Lady Tigers 60-57.

The Lady Tigers (0-3 in the MACJC North 1-10 overall) will try and earn their first conference win of the season Saturday afternoon during their Homecoming matchup with Mississippi Delta.

The CCC women will tip-off their Homecoming game against the Lady Trojans at 1 p.m., and the men will follow at 3 p.m. The Coahoma athletic department has declared the Homecoming a “Maroon Out” and the first 200 CCC fans through the gate will receive a maroon Coahoma T-shirt.

Also, performing will be the local dance company the Sparkling Jewels and Coahoma’s special guests the Beale Street Flippers. The “flippers” have appeared on the nationally televised talent competition, “America’s Got Talent” and perform all over the world and are currently touring NBA arenas across the US.
