CLARKSDALE — The Coahoma Community College men’s baseball team took a break from the diamond Thursday afternoon to visit with students at the Creative Children Childcare Center in Clarksdale and read a few of their favorite Dr. Seuss selections in celebration of Read Across America (RAA).

The official RAA date of celebration is on Dr. Seuss’ birthday of March 2nd, but with that falling on a Sunday this year, the team was invited out Thursday to spend some time at the center.

“We are very excited to have the team here today,” said Jasmine Cleark of Creative Children Childcare Center. “A lot of the young kids when you ask them what they want to be when they grow up will say professional athletes. Just the other day, one of them said they wanted to be a baseball player and I knew that I needed to get in touch with Coach Strong and have the team come out.

“We want the children to know that no matter what they want to do, that getting their education is important, and that reading is important. What better way to express that than to have a group of guys they all look up to come out and read to them.”

“Hop on Pop”, “Mr. Brown Can Moo”, and “The Tooth Book” were just a few of the books that the Tigers shared with the kids who laughed and interacted with the team.

“It was fun, and I enjoyed myself,” said Luis Colon, the Tigers starting centerfielder. “It’s always good to take the time to do things like this. I think all of the guys had a good time and enjoyed getting to spend part of the day with the kids.”

"You're never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child." — Dr. Seuss
