March Speaker’s Bureau Presenters Put Emphasis on Service
CLARKSDALE – Two of this month’s speakers for the Division of Career and Technical Education’s Speaker’s Bureau seemed to share similar sentiments about the importance of excellent customer service skills during their presentations to Coahoma Community College students.
The Speaker’s Bureau is a program designed to bring in professionals from local businesses and industries each month to speak to students in CCC’s Career and Technical Education programs on topics that will help students become successful within their respective career paths and in everyday life.
March’s speakers included Sammy Ellis of SEICO, LLC. who spoke to students in CCC’s Culinary Arts program Friday on the topic “Customer Service, A Strategic Advantage”. During his presentation, Ellis discussed how customer service has evolved and why it has remained one of the most important aspects of business.
“Customer service from business to business is a little different but it’s always important,” said Ellis. “Customer satisfaction creates customer loyalty. That, in turn, increases profitability.”
Ellis also told the students, who all expressed interest in the service industry, the importance of having a positive attitude.
“I always say that the ‘s’ in service stands for smile. A smile can do more for you than you could ever imagine. It sets the tone for a customer’s expectations. … A smile is never out of place.”
March’s speakers also included Ray Sykes of Allimac Computers.
Sykes, who is the owner of a computer servicing small business in Clarksdale, spoke to students in the Computer Servicing Technology technical program about the ins-and-outs of the computer servicing business.
He said he ended up in the business himself somewhat accidently after he purchased a $300 computer in 1983 that didn’t work properly.
“I enjoyed doing mechanic work, so I already had an interest in fixing things,” Sykes said.
He said the success of his business is a result of the “personal touch” he gives customers and encouraged students to continue their education and pursue their passion.
“I do not market my company. I simply provide great service and people have continued to support me,” he said. “You must get that degree. In life, they’re going to measure you based on what type of degrees you have.”
Other presenters for the month of March included Jimmie Sellers of Coahoma Opportunities, Inc. who spoke to students in the Office Systems Technology program about “Professionalism in the Workplace”. Presenter Donald Green of the MS Delta Council is also scheduled to speak to students in the Collision Repair, Brick Block and Masonry, Automotive Technology, Industrial Maintenance, Residential Carpentry and Welding next week.
