CLARKSDALE – Twenty-five days, 69 participants and a total of 185 pounds lost—that’s the success achieved by Coahoma Community College “Fit for Life” first Fitness and Nutrition Boot Camp this summer.

Hosted June 5 through July 29, the eight-week boot camp featured nine CCC faculty and staff members and 60 community members who were committed to leading healthy lifestyles through exercise and nutrition.

In addition to routine exercises that included step aerobics, Zumba and strength training, participants also received free nutritional counseling.

“Our Fit for Life Fitness and Nutrition Boot Camp was a huge success! The participants came with a positive attitude and wanted to make a change in their lives,” said CCC Fit for Life Director Letha Richards.

Richards, who also served as the boot camp's Step Aerobics Instructor, said she enjoyed seeing individuals work towards their fitness goals.

“Working with the boot camp and teaching the step aerobics session was the highlight of my summer,” she said. “CCC’s Fit for Life is shrinking Mississippi one pound at a time!”

Health champions—individuals showing the most weight loss—named during the event were Ricky Fields and Kachena Avery, both of Clarksdale.

Fields, who lost a total of 25.6 pounds, was also named the overall CCC Fit for Life Fitness and Nutrition Boot Camp Health Champion, earning him a certificate and a Garmin fitness tracker.

Fields credited his success to making simple changes in his diet, not missing any days of boot camp, and to the motivation he received from other participants.

Richards said the program plans to release a CCC “Fit for Life” 10-minute workout DVD in the near future and hopes to host a fall fitness boot camp later in the semester.

CCC’s Fit for Life initiative is funded by the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation. Since 2015, the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation has provided almost $500,000 in funding to Coahoma Community College for the Fit for Life initiative that extends from the campus into the surrounding communities and schools.
