CLARKSDALE – Coahoma Community College teamed up with local agencies to show how a little support can make a big impact when it comes to parenthood.

CCC’s Preconception Peer Educator (PPE) organization partnered with Merit Health Northwest Mississippi and the Tougaloo College/Delta HealthPartners Healthy Start Initiative Monday evening to host a community baby shower.

PPE is an organization that focuses on peer education as a means to reduce infant mortality rates and promote preconception health in the community.

Themed, “Welcome to the World Baby ”, the event catered to babies from birth to six-months-old and provided local pregnant women as well as new mothers and fathers with early childhood resources, gifts and the opportunity to fellowship.

To help promote the theme, vendors participating in the event were asked to represent a country or state, and CCC’s PPE decided on an African theme.

“I enjoy being a part of the PPE program. …I have learned so much useful information,” said CCC PPE President Lameka President.

“Being a part of this program has presented me with the opportunity to meet a lot of people and exposed me to a lot of new things and ideas,” added Tytianna Wigley, CCC PPE vice-president.

CCC Coordinator of Counseling Services and PPE Advisor Renee’ Hall said the event was a positive learning experience for all members of the organization.

“It is a great feeling to see our students working in the community, representing the college and experiencing the joy of giving back,” said Hall. “These girls give 100 percent at every event that are involved in. Our goal this semester is to recruit and train more CCC students to become a part of this wonderful organization.”

Members of CCC’s PPE attending the event were advisors Dian Thomas, dormitory manager; Undra Haggan, Campus Nurse; Hall as well as PPE members President; Wigley; and Martavious Ferrell, photographer.
