MVSU Mock Trial

Coahoma Community College’s Social Science Department will host Mississippi Valley State University’s (MVSU’s) Mock Trial Team Thursday, November 2, as they prepare to face-off against some of the best mock trial teams in the country next month in a national competition.

Since 1998, MVSU’s Mock Trial Team, the only team at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in the State of Mississippi and one of the few in the nation, has won numerous awards and significant scholarship money towards law school tuition for its members. During the first mock trial competition this fall, the Jackson Joust at Milsaps College, and Darius Bailey was awarded “Outstanding Witness.”

During the upcoming mock trial, hosted at 6:30 p.m. in the Whiteside Hall Lecture Room, the team will present an attempted murder case while receiving feedback and constructive criticism from CCC Social Science Chair Barbara Boschert and her husband, Attorney Curtis Boschert.

The Boscherts both previously coached a mock trial team at Clarksdale High School. The team was the only all-minority team to advance to state competition, where it placed fifth.

Barbara Boschert encourages CCC students to come out and witness this event. She said those students who attended the last two year really enjoyed the performance.

“This is a tremendous opportunity, particularly for criminal justice and pre-law students, however all CCC students can benefit from seeing Valley's award winning team in action,” Boschert said. “The trial will be a demonstration in strategic planning necessary to plan and present legal documents, critical thinking— including how to use facts to support a well articulated argument—and public speaking.”
