CCC paused Tuesday morning to recognize sophomore scholars during the annual "Sophomore Class & Awards Day" program. Pictured are sophomores named to the prestigious "Who's Who Among Students."

CLARKSDALE – Coahoma Community College sophomores who excelled academically during the 2016-2017 school year were recognized Tuesday morning during the “Sophomore Class & Awards Day” program.

Family, friends, as well as CCC faculty and staff congratulated the dozens of scholars present for the annual event, hosted at 11 a.m. in the Pinnacle.

Miss CCC 2016-2017 Cortise Brown of Clarksdale, MS said the day was an opportunity to pause and reflect on the Class of 2017’s “time, growth, and academic accomplishments” that occured over the past two years at CCC.

“Two years ago, we entered this campus as young teenagers excited about the ‘college experience’… now, we have matured into young adults with a strong academic foundation,” she said.

Mr. CCC 2016-2017 Royce Williams Jr. of Cleveland, MS expressed similar sentiments.

“Upon graduating high school, I was always asked ‘Why Coahoma?’” he said.

“As I reflect on my journey here, I must say that I made the best decision by attending CCC. CCC’s staff actually care about their students and they are hands-on, which is exactly what I needed as an incoming freshman.”

Award presentations included recognition of high-achieving sophomores in the Division of Academic Affairs, Division of Career and Technical Education, Honors College and Division of Student Affairs.

Academic Dean Rolonda Brown also recognized 43 Tigers who where named to the prestigious “Who’s Who Among Students” and eligible to contend for three scholarships to further their education.

During his closing remarks, CCC Chief of Staff Jerone Shaw encouraged graduates to keep moving forward and to share their success at CCC with others.

“I think your choice to attend Coahoma Community College was the right choice,” Shaw said.

“You’re going to take what the faculty and staff gave you and move on to the next level. Congratulations and best wishes to future for each of you.”

The program also included an invocation by TreShawn Malone; a welcome by Brown; a reading of the purpose by sophomore LaDeja Strong; poetry readings by Kelita Tyler and Beulah Holly; expressions by Williams.; reading of the Class Will by Amber Melton and Donte’ Reynolds; words of encouragement from Zylpha Scott; and selections from CCC Men and Women Ensembles.

CCC will host its 2017 Commencement Exercise at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 13.
