CLARKSDALE – Coahoma Community College is proud to announce its March 2017 faculty and staff Employees of the Month.

Honored as the faculty Employee of the Month is Melvin Newson of Clarksdale, MS.

Newson serves as a chair/instructor for the Division of Career and Technical Education’s Computer Servicing Technology program.

Prior to joining CCC’s faculty 10 years ago, Newson taught Communications and Electronics courses at ITT Technical Institute in Cordova, TN.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in Applied Physics from Jackson State University, a master’s degree in Microelectronics/Photonics Engineering from the University of Arkansas and recently earned a Ph.D. in Higher Education from Jackson State University.

According to Newson, he enjoys the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of his students.

“What I enjoy most about my career in education is working with young people,” he said. “It’s very fulfilling helping students to realize their potential and motivating them to work hard to achieve their goals.”

Newson and his wife, Nancy, have been married for 10 years and have three daughters— Naomi (CCC Class of 2016), Mackenzie and Madison.

Honored as CCC’s staff Employee of the Month is Patricia Sykes of Lyons, MS.

Sykes joined CCC’s custodial staff in 1999. Since then, she has been stationed in Whiteside Hall, the old Business Office (J.W. Addision Building) and the President’s house. She currently works in the Vivian M. Presley Administration Building.

Sykes said she enjoys the opportunity to interact with her colleagues and students.

“I love being able to interact with the various departments on campus and working with them to help our students be successful,” she said.

She said being named the staff Employee of the Month is rewarding.

“It feels great,” she said. “It was a surprise, but I’m honored.”

Outside of work, Sykes enjoys reading her bible, shopping and spending time with her parents.

The purpose of CCC’s Employee of the Month program is to recognize and reward faculty and staff who exhibit work and behaviors that support and further the mission, goals, values and initiatives of Coahoma Community College.

Each Employee of the Month winner receives a picture, a designated parking spot, a shirt from CCC’s Bookstore, a hair style or cut courtesy of CCC’s Cosmetology/Barbering Department, marquee announcement and website recognition.
