CCC Spring Concert 2018

With angelic voices and harmonic sounds, the Coahoma Community College Concert Choir treated a packed house to their annual Spring Concert.

The event which took place at New Covenant M.B. Church was the choir's year-end summation of a spectacular exhibition of showmanship and musical regalia that the group has been known to produce for many years.

The concert was the final major performance associated with Coahoma’s concert series for the year and also concluded CCC’s Cultural Awareness Week activities.

The Concert Choir is one of the premier choirs in the southern region and the nation; serving as an excellent ambassador for Coahoma Community College within its surrounding communities and the religious sector. The choir’s repertoire includes classical and arousing concert spirituals along with contemporary and traditional gospel.

Kelvin Towers, director of choir activities, is pleased with the group’s performance and sees great things for the ensemble in the future, with hopes of securing new talent.

“We must immediately turn the page to recruitment for the next academic year. We have come in contact with many singers all across the state who want to participate in our program,” said Towers.  “It’s now a matter of reviewing the applicants who have contacted our office to arrange their music auditions.

The CCC Choir is always on the lookout for young talent and plans to continue its efforts to grow the program. In particular, the group is utilizing social media to scout and audition prospective members.

“We have successfully put in place a new audition system that will allow interested students the opportunity to submit preliminary audition criteria via social media through our Coahoma Community College Choir Facebook page,” said Towers. “This will enable students to be more comfortable and will help my staff to evaluate the singers at their best. The student advisory council urges all faculty, staff, and students to like our Coahoma Community College Choir Facebook page; allowing our constituents the opportunity to keep up with the latest news, dates and also see video coverage from previous live performances.”

The Concert Choir has also toured various cities in the southern region of the country and the following major cities: Chicago, Detroit, Atlanta, Orlando, San Antonio, and Houston.

Some of their noteworthy performances include appearances on distinct programs that featured celebrities such as Judge Greg Mathis, actress Tonea Stewart, gospel host Merdean Gales, and national recording artists: Ricky Dillard, Dorinda Clark Cole, Amber Bullock, and Kurt Carr. The highlights of the 2016-2017 academic school year include performing at the 2016 Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Gospel Extravaganza in Washington, DC, and being featured in the upcoming Pulse Film’s (London, England) documentary with the choir’s arrangement of “A Change is Gonna Come”; which will be aired internationally.

Towers wants to showcase one of Coahoma’s greatest jewels and leave a resounding message to all that they have the opportunity to perform for.

“We wish to expose our surrounding communities with the latest trends in gospel music, that’s happening in key cities across the nation,” said Towers.
