Who is eligible to take the HiSET?

You may take the HiSET exam if you are not enrolled in high school, and if you are 18 years old and out of school.  Special exceptions must be met by 16 and 17 year olds.

What do I have to do to pass the HiSET?

You must be able to compute, interpret information and express yourself in writing on a level comparable to that of graduating high school seniors.

How much time does it take to complete the HiSET?

The five tests take at least 7 ½ hours to complete.  Math is 120 minutes; Language Arts Reading is 65 minutes; Language Arts Writing is 120 minutes; Social Studies is 70 minutes; and Science is 80 minutes.

How much does it cost to take the HiSET?

The cost of taking the HiSET is $88.75 for the five content areas and $10.75 for each subtest. There is a test center fee of $35.00 included. You must register and pay online to take your tests prior to testing.  Payments must be made via credit, debit card, or voucher.

What if I don’t pass part or all the test the first time?

You can take one or more parts of the test again.  You do not have to take the entire test.

How many times may I take the HiSET?

Examinees can test 3 times on each subtest.  After that, you must wait 60 days to test again.  

What score must I make to pass the HiSET?

To pass the HiSET, you must score an 8 on each subtest.  You will need a total scale score battery of 45.  The score range is as follows:

College/Career Readiness: 15-20

Passing Score: 8-14

Below Passing: 1-7

You must score 2 out of 6 on the essay


How long does it take to get my HiSET results?

HiSET results are usually available after the completion of each content area.  Writing takes 3-5 days to post. 

What accommodations are available for people with disabilities who want to take the HSE tests?

For candidates with a documents physical, sensory, emotional, or specific learning disability, special test accommodations are available.  Each request is considered on an individual basis.  A candidate must visit HiSET testing at https://hiset.ets.org/requirements/disabilities/
