“CCC’s Inaugural Summer Nursing Residency Program”

During the week of June 11-16, 2006, Coahoma Community College began its first Summer Nursing Residency Program.  Twelve (12) students from Bolivar, Coahoma, and Tunica Counties participated in the week-long program.  During the week-long program students received classroom instruction related to Medical terminology, nursing, and Anatomy and Physiology.  SNRP participants also engaged in shadowing experiences at Aaron E. Clinic.  During the program, students were also afforded to opportunity grasp a feel for life on a college campus. The program was concluded with the SNRP presentation banquet, during which participants made presentations related to some of the pressing medical issues of the Mississippi Delta.

 

“Guaranteed 4.0 Learning System Seminar A Huge Success”

On Friday, September 15, 2006, MS Delta Rural Healthcare Training Partnership in conjunction with CCC Tech Prep sponsored Donna O. Johnson’s Guaranteed 4.0 Learning System Seminar on the campus of Coahoma Community College.  This nationally recognized seminar provides students with an easy-to-follow 3-step plan for achieving academic success.  Thirteen (13) high schools from the Coahoma Community College district (Bolivar, Coahoma, Tallahatchie, Tunica, and Quitman counties) were invited to attend the seminar.  Eight (8) schools from four (4) counties participated in the seminar.  Final registration totaled 123 students and 25 faculty members (math and science). 

During the four hour seminar, Ms. Johnson, along with her associate, Y.C. Chen provided students with a blueprint for academic success.  Topics related to stress, time management, and note-taking were addressed.  Students and teachers actively engaged in discussions and scenarios aimed at reinforcing important concepts associated with the three-step process of the Guaranteed 4.0 Learning System.  The seminar also served as professional development for the math, science and allied health instructors.  Teachers were provided with an overview of the plan so that they may implement it in their classroom instruction. 

Each student and teacher received all necessary reference materials associated with the system of learning.  Furthermore, each student was given a personal guarantee from Donna O. Johnson stating, “Follow the plan, make straight A’s or we’ll give you $200!”

WXVT news channel was on campus to conduct interviews with several administrators concerning the importance of providing such a seminar.  Ms. Johnson along with faculty members and students were interviewed about the information distributed during the seminar.  There was also a local broadcasting network that was on campus to conduct interviews and take pictures.  Finally, Ms. Panny Mayfield, Director of Public Relations for Coahoma Community College, was on hand to get reactions and comments related to the seminar. 
 
Of the 123 students that attended the seminar, (11) eleven were participants from the Summer Nursing Residency Program, thirteen (13) were freshmen, forty-two (42) were sophomore, thirty-three (33) were junior, and thirty-five (35) were seniors.  Thirty-nine (39) of the students in attendance were males and eighty-four (84) were females.  Faculty members in attendance consisted of six (6) counselors, nine (9) science instructors, seven (7) math instructors, 2 allied health instructors, and one (1) career counselor.

Upon completion of the seminar, we collected one hundred and thirty-three (133) completed evaluations.  Ninety-four percent (94%) of respondents said that the overall quality of the seminar was effective.  The style and delivery methods of the presenters were considered effective by ninety-four percent (94%) of seminar participants.  More than ninety-seven percent (97.5%) of seminar participants believed that the use of audiovisual materials and handouts greatly enhanced the quality of the seminar.  When asked if there was adequate time allotted for the seminar, ninety percent (90%) of the seminar participants said yes.  Furthermore, ninety-one percent (91%) agreed that the presenters allowed adequate time for discussion.  Finally, ninety-one percent (91%) of seminar participants believed that the seminar was helpful or beneficial to them.
