RESIDENCE HALLS
Coahoma Community College provides supervised residence halls for men and women that are enrolled full-time at the institution. The Department of Housing is committed to offering a maturing experience of growth and excellence for students living in the Residence Halls. The department exposes the belief that students learn and grow in many ways during their college years. Therefore, the department seeks to facilitate the personal and academic growth of its residents.

All rooms in residence halls are equipped with telephone outlets and wired for cable television.


HOUSING POLICY

  1. To be eligible to reside in college housing, an applicant must be a full-time (12 hrs) student making normal progress toward a degree or certificate.
  2. Students not maintaining a semester grade point average of a minimum of 2.0 will not be allowed to live in the residence halls.
  3. All students desiring on-campus housing during the regular academic year is required to sign a residence contract, which is also the housing application. The terms of the contract is for the academic year as specified in the college catalog.
  4. A $100.00 reservation deposit is required with the housing application. The deposit will remain on file throughout the resident's occupancy. The deposit serves as a combination room reservation and fine fee. The deposit will carry over to the next year if there are no damages or other sanctions against the student.   5. Students will have a total of one week after the starting date of registration to become a full-time registered student at the institution. Students not registered within this time period will be dismissed from the dormitory until he/she has cleared the registration process.

It is a privilege for students to reside in campus residence halls. That privilege can be suspended/revoked for any/all (but not limited to) of the following:

  • Refusal/uncooperative of room check
  • Uncleanliness of room
  • Fighting in the room
  • Unauthorized hair grooming (braiding, cutting, eyebrow arching, etc.)
  • Confrontations that disturbs the peace
  • Loud music in or around the residence halls
  • Vehicles that are not in operation being left in front of or around the dormitory
  • Unauthorized room visitation
  • Abusage of dormitory rooms and content
  • Unauthorized overnight visitation
  • Caught stealing content of residents’ rooms
  • Gambling
  • Unauthorized checkout or transfer to another room
  • Unauthorized appliances (including hot plates and George Forman Grills)
  • Illegal drugs, weapons, alcoholic beverages
  • Being disrespectful to housing staff, including resident assistants

Note: Understand that any student committing any infraction or a combination of the above infractions three times during the course of the semester will not be
allowed for the following semester to reside in the residence halls. Understand
that the Dean of Student Affairs upon discretion for immediate action, reserve the right to dismiss any student from the residence halls without an informal/formal hearing.

ROOM DEPOSIT POLICY
All (including students on full scholarship and athletes) students are required to pay a $100.00 housing deposit, before being allowed to check in the dormitory. Refund of the deposit will be made when the terms and conditions of the contract have been met and the student is not applying for housing for the next academic year (less any damages, checkout charges or sanctions). Refund of deposit is automatically forfeited if student (s) is dismissed from the residence hall.

KEY POLICY
Each resident is given a key when a housing deposit of $100.00 is made. Keys and access cards are to be turned in the Hall Director when the hall closes for holidays or when the student leaves at the end of the school year. There will be a $35.00 charge for a lost key and $25.00 charge for improper check out.

ROOMMATE ASSIGNNMENT
Roommate preference will be honored if both applicants request each other and a vacancy exists. It is helpful if both students send the housing deposits and applications at the same time to ensure the likelihood of the request being granted by the housing office.


PRIVATE ROOM
Any student may apply for a private room. However, requests will be honored each semester only after all applicants have been assigned on a double occupancy basis. The rate of a private room is an additional 60% of the double room rate per semester. The additional rate is due upon assignment to the private room.


OPENING AND CLOSING OF RESIDENCE HALLS
During certain holidays and breaks, the residence halls will close. The holidays and breaks include, but are not limited to, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break, and Easter. The residence halls are not open for occupancy during summer school. All students are expected to vacate the dormitories at the announced time, unless approved by the Director of Housing and Residence Life.

LOBBY HOURS
Lobby hours (visitation) are from 6:00 pm until 10:00 pm daily. All residence hall doors are locked at 1:00 pm daily. Access can be gained by card key only.

DAMAGES
The student is responsible for damages to his or her room and shall reimburse the office of Housing and Residence Life for damages or for loss of accommodation and furnishing. Damages to public areas may be billed to the responsible individual(s) or to the entire hall residents. The student (s) will not be allowed to reside in the residence halls until the bill is paid to the institution for damages assessed.

LOST/STOLEN KEY-ACCESS CARD
If a key is lost or stolen, there will be a $35.00 charge for the replacement of the key and cylinder. There will be a $10.00 fee to replace a lost or damaged access card.

ROOM TRANSFER PROCEDURE

  1. Occupant must contact the Residence Hall Director to request a room transfer.
  2. If approval is granted and their is sufficient space in the residence hall, the Residence Hall Director will begin the proper transfer procedure.
  3. Students will not be allowed to transfer to another room if their previous room key is lost, the room is damaged, and/or if they have dormitory infractions.

Note: Any student who transfers to another room without properly checking out the previous room will automatically forfeit his/her housing deposit.

ROOM CHECK OUT/ PROCEDURE

  1. Room must be vacated in good order within 24 hours after the student's last final examination. All personal belongings must be removed from the room, key must be returned, and other checkout procedures completed with the residence hall supervisor.
  2. Failure to properly checkout will result in the student being assessed a $25 fee.
  3. A cleaning fee of $25 is assessed to students who leave their rooms unclean.
  4. Failure to return room key will result in a $35 fee.
  5. A $25 fee will be assessed each day past checkout time.

RESIDENCE HALL VISITATION
In-house visitations are extended to members of the same sex only and are allowed with permission in advance from the Residence Hall Director.
Each student having overnight guest will be subject to only one guest per semester and the guest must be at least twelve (12) years of age. The college assumes no liabilities in case of an accident. Children are not allowed to stay in the dormitory overnight.

Visitors of the opposite sex are not permitted in the residence halls beyond the lobby area. Students of the opposite sex having business in the residence halls should inquire at the office. Violation of this regulation will result in disciplinary actions.

Residence hall lobbies open at 6:00 p.m. and close at 10:00 p.m. daily.
Hair grooming (braiding, cutting, styling, etc) and card playing is strictly prohibited in the dorm lobby, unless structured by the Director of Student Activities.

OPEN DORM POLICY
Open-Dorm is permitted in the residence halls with authorization from the Residence Hall Director. (See Residence Hall Handbook for rules and regulations.)

SECURITY
Security is primarily the responsibility of the student. Doors should be locked when the resident is not in the room. The college cannot assume responsibility for loss or damage to students’ possessions. Students or their parents are encouraged to carry appropriate insurance to cover such losses.
Security doors are a part of the security system in each residence hall. These doors are locked during certain hours and are not to be used except in an emergency. It is the responsibility of the resident to adhere to the rules governing the use of these doors. At no time should these doors be propped open for constant access.

The front desk will be manned 18 hours a day in the women’s residence halls and 12 hours (noon to midnight) in the men's halls. The desk person will confront any unescorted person of the opposite sex attempting to enter the residential hall during visitation hours or any other hour. The desk person will call campus police if necessary.

SURVEILLANCE CAMARAS
In an effort to create a more safe and secure environment for our residential students, Coahoma Community College has installed surveillance cameras in the residence halls. These cameras are used to monitor hallways, exit and entrance doors. These cameras are used for the sole purpose of helping to secure the dormitories from unauthorized visitors. They will not be used for any other purpose than those indicated above. These cameras will monitor and record activity within the hallways, as well as exit and entrance doors twenty-four (24) hours a day. The cameras will not be manned at all times but will be checked periodically by the campus Chief of Police.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY
Students should use multiple outlets/adapters with surge protectors to connect more than one appliance. However, any student found to be overloading the circuit will be required to reduce usage. Extension cords should not be placed under carpet or wrapped around pipes in rooms.

RESIDENCE ROOM CONTENT
Coahoma Community College is not responsible for stolen or damaged personal items such as jewelry, clothing, furniture, TVs, VCRs, DVDs, radios, carpet/rugs, or bedding items. Bringing aforesaid items is at the responsibility of the occupant.
