To a filled Whiteside Hall lecture room, 2022 Humanities Teacher of the Year Award recipient Shanelle D. Frazier presented a compelling and energizing lecture to symbolize delightful reception of the honor.
Frazier themed her presentation, ‘Effective Communication Amongst the College Campus Community by Generational Breakdown: A How-to Guide.’
After receiving commendation from fellow counterparts and Mississippi Humanities Council board member Dr. Temika Simmons, Frazier expressed gratitude for the accolade and support.
“Amongst the campus community, you have to know how to effectively communicate because you serve four different types of students from four generations,” Frazier stressed. “You can apply these techniques within your departments, divisions.”
The honoree informed the audience of generational traits that would enable them to serve in their roles more effectively. More specifically, she filled them in on preferred modes of communication and how attitudes vary among four generations: Baby Boomers, Generation X, Generation Y, and Generation Z.
Frazier urged fellow faculty and counterparts to create a culture of mutual respect in the workplace and the classroom.
“Treat everyone the same as much as you can; so, basically, don’t separate. In the classroom, I know that you probably have experienced your nontraditional students in the room with a lot of traditional students, and they feel a certain type of way,” Frazier explained. “So, what you have to do is be able to cater to everybody because you have to know that you’re dealing with four generations.”
The Clarksdale, Miss., native also serves as the student employment coordinator for the Financial Aid Office and has taught only four years in CCC’s English department as an adjunct Public Speaking instructor teaching evening and online classes.
