The Adult Education Program offers training that will enhance one's opportunities in obtaining and retaining employment.  Most employers require a high school diploma or GED, as well as some basic computer knowledge.  These programs assist individuals in obtaining those goals.

Coahoma Community College now requires all students to have a high school diploma/GED to enter ANY program.

Who is eligible to sign up for the Adult Education Program?

MS residents, 17 years of age or older, that are not currently enrolled in a public, private or home instructional program.

How long are the classes?

The AE/GED classes are self-paced.  Finishing in a specific time frame depends solely on the individual.

How much is the class?

Classes are free to the public.  All programs are funded by the Mississippi Community College Board.

What are the benefits of participating in the Adult Education Program?

The Adult Education Programs offer adults a chance to prepare for the General Educational Development test (GED), college entrance, vocational-technical education, employment, or promotion on the job.  This program is also open to help anyone who wants to improve their basic skills for employment or retaining their employment.

Who is eligible to take the GED test?

  • Individuals who are not enrolled in high school.
  • Individuals who meet state requirements regarding age, residency (at least 30 days), and the length of time since leaving school.
  • Special exceptions must be met by those who are 16 and 17 years old.

How much time does it take to complete the GED test?

The GED test is five hours long to complete all sections.

How much does it cost to take the GED test?

The cost of the complete battery of tests is a non-refundable $120.  If you need to retake any subject area, the cost is $30 per test.

How many times can I take the test?

Students can test three times on the same subject without waiting.  After the third attempt, there is a 60-day waiting period before retesting.

What do I have to do to pass the GED test?

To pass the test, scores must average 600 with no individual subtest score falling below 150.

What accommodations are available to people with disabilities who want to take the test?

For candidates with a documented physical, sensory, emotional, or specific learning disability, special test accommodations are available.  Each request is considered on an individual basis.  A candidate should request Form L-15.  These forms describe the information necessary to document the disability.

How long does it take to get the results?

Scores will be returned from the test within 3 hours of completion of each subject, unless validation is needed through the Automated Scoring Engine (ASE).  This will result in next-day scores for Reasoning Through Language Arts, Science and Social Studies.

Is there an incentive program?

Students receive a free official GED testing voucher when students complete a minimum of 40 classroom hours and pass the GED read exam.

Will passing the GED Test get me into college?

  • About 95% of U.S. colleges and universities accept GED graduates in the same manner as high school graduates.
  • At Coahoma Community College you receive a FREE SEMESTER (tuition only) when you obtain your GED through the Adult Basic Education Program.

The 2002 GED Series test is no longer available effective January 2, 2014.  There fore all previous scores will be invalid for the new 2014 series.
