According to Dr. Ruckel, "Serving on the MS/LA Advisory Board not only represents our region but also serves as an engine of growth and opportunity for all chapters: large or small, new or established, award-winning or as-yet unrecognized."
To be elected to the MS/LA Advisory Board, the PTK advisor must be part of an active chapter of the MS/LA Region in good standing. The duties of this position include assisting with preparations for and implementation of regional events, serving as consultants to regional business, and aiding the Regional Coordinators and Regional Officers as necessary for the good of the region. The position also requires a commitment of time and travel to regional events.
As a member of the MS/LA Advisory Board, advisors agree to assist with advice, preparation, implementation, and attendance at regional events. They also commit time and travel to national events such as the Catalyst Convention and Honors Institute to help with pre-planning sessions, regional fellowship and alumni events, and educational excursions and activities.
During the previous term, Mrs. Tompkins collaborated with a fellow MS/LA Advisory Board Member to conduct the educational forum at each Fall Leadership Conference, titled “Don’t Get Shipwrecked with HIA.” At the Honors Institute, she co-taught several breakout sessions alongside another board member each summer. Additionally, she assisted with the awards program during the Awards Gala each spring.
Through this position, Mrs. Tompkins has gained valuable insight into the purpose behind PTK’s initiatives and a deeper understanding of the many ways it supports and empowers students. She shared that the MS/LA Advisory Board is more than just a governing body—it’s an opportunity to network, collaborate, and learn from others about what strategies are effective and which are not.
"I see this board as an opportunity to help CCC Alpha Omicron Pi Chapter members earn scholarships, grow as leaders, develop a heart for service, and build a strong community of scholars through fellowship," said Tompkins.
Mrs. Tompkins’ continued service on the Mississippi-Louisiana Advisory Board reflects her dedication to student success and leadership within Phi Theta Kappa. Her passion for scholarship, service, and fellowship continues to inspire both students and colleagues at Coahoma Community College and throughout the region.
