Four Coahoma Community College academic leaders attended the Mississippi General Education Statewide Workshop at Mississippi State University in Starkville, Mississippi, to discuss statewide academic reform.

The workshop brought together higher education professionals from institutions across Mississippi to examine the future of general education, identify opportunities to improve student learning and discuss approaches to academic collaboration. Through presentations, interactive activities and roundtable discussions, participants considered how colleges and universities can strengthen general education programs while responding to the changing needs of students.

Representing Coahoma Community College were Dr. Rolonda Brown, dean of academic affairs; Dr. Sheila Carter, director of instructional services; Dr. Nekedra Blockett, director of admissions and registrar; and Dr. Stacy Jones, science instructor. Their participation provided an opportunity for the college to contribute to statewide conversations involving curriculum development, instructional practices and academic improvement.

Held under the theme “Shared Questions. Stronger Students. A Brighter Mississippi,” the workshop emphasized the importance of collaboration among Mississippi's higher education institutions in developing a shared understanding of general education and its role in preparing students for academic and professional success.

General education serves as a foundation for students pursuing associate and bachelor's degrees, providing essential academic knowledge and opportunities to develop critical thinking, communication, problem-solving and analytical skills. As institutions evaluate their academic programs, discussions surrounding general education reform continue to address how foundational courses can better support student achievement, degree completion and preparation for future educational opportunities.

Throughout the workshop, participants examined the challenges and opportunities associated with implementing meaningful academic changes. Sessions addressed institutional readiness, the development of a cohesive general education framework and the importance of engaging faculty members in conversations surrounding curriculum design and reform.

A central focus of the discussions was the role of faculty participation in shaping academic initiatives. Participants considered how institutional collaboration, effective communication and shared responsibility can contribute to successful academic improvements. The conversations also highlighted the importance of ensuring that general education requirements remain relevant, academically sound and responsive to student needs.

One of the workshop's interactive components was a pre-mortem exercise, which encouraged participants to consider potential obstacles that could affect the implementation of general education reforms. Rather than focusing exclusively on expected outcomes, the exercise challenged attendees to anticipate possible difficulties and identify practical strategies for addressing them before changes are introduced.

This approach provided an opportunity for institutional representatives to evaluate the importance of planning, communication and stakeholder involvement when developing or revising academic policies. It also encouraged participants to consider how decisions made during the planning process can influence the effectiveness and sustainability of long-term institutional initiatives.

Roundtable discussions provided additional opportunities for participants to exchange perspectives on general education practices, examine approaches used by other institutions and identify strategies that could support academic improvement. These discussions encouraged collaboration among representatives from different colleges and universities while recognizing the distinct missions and student populations served by Mississippi's higher education institutions.

For Coahoma Community College, participation in the statewide workshop aligned with the institution's continued focus on academic excellence, instructional effectiveness and student achievement. The event offered representatives an opportunity to engage with colleagues from across the state and consider approaches that may inform future conversations about the college's academic programs.

The participation of representatives from academic affairs, instructional services, admissions and science instruction also reflected the range of institutional perspectives involved in discussions about general education. Each area contributes to the academic experience of students, from enrollment and course planning to classroom instruction and academic progression.

By bringing together professionals with different responsibilities and areas of expertise, statewide discussions can help institutions examine how general education policies connect to broader goals involving student success, academic consistency and educational opportunity.

The workshop also emphasized the importance of evidence-based practices in evaluating academic programs and determining whether instructional approaches are meeting established learning objectives. Participants considered how institutions can use information, assessment and professional collaboration to guide decisions that affect general education requirements and student learning experiences.

As Mississippi's higher education institutions continue to consider approaches to general education reform, opportunities for professional engagement remain important to the development of informed academic practices. Discussions involving institutional leadership, faculty and student support professionals can contribute to a more coordinated understanding of the challenges and priorities shaping higher education.

The workshop concluded with participating institutions sharing key takeaways and identifying opportunities to advance general education initiatives across Mississippi. These closing discussions emphasized continued communication, institutional participation and the importance of translating statewide conversations into meaningful considerations for individual campuses.

Through its involvement in the Mississippi General Education Statewide Workshop, Coahoma Community College continued its participation in efforts to strengthen academic programs, support faculty and staff professional development, and promote educational opportunities that contribute to student success throughout the Mississippi Delta and beyond.
