(Clarksdale, Miss.) — Melissa Faulkner, English Instructor at Coahoma Community College, has been recognized for her dedication to teaching and student engagement after
being named Humanities Teacher of the Year.
The honor recognizes educators who demonstrate excellence in the humanities through impactful instruction, mentorship, and a commitment to inspiring students in the classroom. For Faulkner, the recognition came as a meaningful and humbling surprise.
“I was extremely surprised and honored to learn that I received the Humanities Teacher of the Year award this year,” Faulkner said. “It is truly humbling to know that I have reached students in a way that led them to speak about me so positively. Knowing that my care and support for them is seen means more than I can express.”
Faulkner’s passion for literature and teaching is rooted in her strong academic background. She earned her undergraduate degree in education with a concentration in English from the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). She later continued her studies at National University in San Diego, California, where she received a Master of Arts in English with a specialization in Gothic studies.
As part of the recognition, Faulkner will share her scholarly interests during a presentation titled “Why I Chose the Dark Side (of Literature)”. The presentation explores the significance of Gothic literature and the role it plays in helping readers examine fear, cultural anxieties, and social expectations.
Through the presentation, Faulkner examines why stories centered around monsters, madness, and the macabre remain relevant in literature and society. She also discusses how Gothic fiction provides readers with a space to confront difficult ideas while encouraging deeper reflection about human nature and cultural perspectives.
The campus community will have the opportunity to hear more from Faulkner during a special Humanities Teacher of the Year Luncheon, scheduled for Wednesday, March 18, at 12 p.m. in the Coahoma Community College Gallery. During the luncheon, Faulkner will expand on the themes of her presentation and discuss the importance of fiction and literary study in understanding the human experience.
The event will provide faculty, staff, and students an opportunity to celebrate Faulkner’s achievement while learning more about the power of literature to challenge ideas, spark imagination, and foster critical thinking.
Beyond the classroom, Faulkner has also dedicated time to serving her community. She previously volunteered with the Panola County Humane Society and the Panola County Domestic Violence Shelter, reflecting her commitment to supporting others and giving back.
In her personal life, Faulkner has been married for 25 years and is the proud mother of one son. Her dedication to family, service, and education mirrors the compassion and encouragement she consistently brings to her students.
Faulkner’s recognition as Humanities Teacher of the Year highlights the lasting impact educators can have when they combine academic expertise with a genuine passion for helping students succeed.
Through faculty members like Faulkner, Coahoma Community College continues to uphold its commitment to academic excellence, meaningful learning experiences, and the advancement of the humanities.
