(Clarksdale, Miss.) — Coahoma Community College proudly celebrates the outstanding achievements of its Alpha Omicron Pi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society following an impressive showing at the PTK Mississippi/Louisiana Regional Awards Gala, held March 5–6 at Mississippi State University. Adding to the celebration, chapter advisor Monica Tompkins has been selected as a recipient of Phi Theta Kappa’s 2026 Distinguished Advisor Award, one of the organization’s highest honors recognizing exceptional mentorship and leadership.

During the two-day conference, chapter members engaged in a variety of enriching experiences focused on leadership, scholarship, and service. Students participated in professional development sessions, connected with fellow Phi Theta Kappa members from across the region, and gained insight from distinguished guest speakers, including Dr. Mark E. Keenum and Mrs. Keenum. In addition to conference activities, members had the opportunity to explore the Mississippi State University campus, further enhancing their collegiate experience.

The regional awards recognize excellence in academic scholarship, extensive research, leadership development, and impactful service projects that benefit both campus and community. Coahoma’s Alpha Omicron Pi Chapter earned several prestigious honors, including:

  • Top 10 Distinguished Chapter
  • Top 10 Honors in Action
  • Top 10 College Project
  • Golden Key Award — Jada Wilson
  • Horizon Award — Joharrison Rockett and Monica Tompkins
  • 5-Star Chapter Award
  • Distinguished Advisor Award — Jolene Hoots (presented to Mrs. Monica Tompkins)

The Horizon Award recognizes both new and seasoned advisors who have demonstrated a renewed or strengthened commitment to Phi Theta Kappa and its mission of student success, leadership, and academic excellence.

Tompkins will be formally recognized for her 2026 Distinguished Advisor Award at PTK Catalyst, the organization’s annual international convention, scheduled for March 26–28 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Through her leadership as a chapter advisor, Tompkins has consistently created meaningful opportunities for students to grow in confidence, discover their potential, and pursue their academic and professional goals. Her dedication to mentorship and student development continues to leave a lasting impact both inside and beyond the classroom.

These accomplishments are a testament to the hard work, commitment, and excellence of our students and advisors. Their ability to excel in scholarship, leadership, and service reflects the very best of Coahoma Community College.
