(Clarksdale, Miss.) — Coahoma Community College will expand its intercollegiate athletics program with the addition of women’s volleyball, that’s set to begin in Fall 2026. The introduction of the sport marks a significant milestone for Tiger Athletics as the College continues to broaden opportunities for student involvement and institutional growth.
The addition of volleyball stems from long-term planning and a shared vision for expanding athletic offerings. The concept was initially explored in 2018 by President Dr. Valmadge T. Towner, and has since been advanced under the leadership of Director of Athletics Selina Reid, who recognized the sport’s potential to enhance both the athletic department and the overall student experience.
“Adding women’s volleyball to Coahoma Community College Athletics has been years in the making and reflects our commitment to expanding opportunities for student-athletes while strengthening our athletics department,” said Reid. “After carefully evaluating institutional goals, regional interest, and opportunities to enhance student engagement, we are confident the timing is right to move forward with launching volleyball in Fall 2026.”
As volleyball continues to grow in popularity across Mississippi, particularly at the high school level, the new program creates a direct pathway for student-athletes seeking to continue their careers at the collegiate level. With the sport gaining traction within the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) and NJCAA Region 23, Coahoma is positioned to attract talent from both its immediate service area and beyond.
“Expanding our athletic offerings with volleyball strengthens our recruiting footprint and creates new opportunities for student-athletes to enroll at Coahoma Community College while competing in a sport they love,” Reid said.
In addition to recruitment, the program is expected to elevate campus engagement by introducing a new competitive outlet for students and a fresh game-day atmosphere for the campus community. Faculty, staff, alumni, and supporters will have additional opportunities to connect through Tiger Athletics, further strengthening school pride.
Efforts to establish the program are already in motion. The College has posted the Head Volleyball Coach position and are looking for qualified candidates. Marion Reid Gym is currently being retrofitted to serve as the team’s home venue, and Coahoma has secured a place on the 2026 Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference volleyball schedule, signaling its official entry into conference competition.
President Dr. Valmadge T. Towner emphasized the broader significance of the program in supporting student development and expanding opportunities.
“Higher education should provide lifelong experiences, meaningful exposures, lasting friendships, and valuable lessons for students,” said Towner. “Participating in athletics offers a unique and personal journey that helps students develop into well-rounded individuals prepared for life beyond the classroom. After seeing many of our district high schools launch new volleyball programs, we aspire to offer deserving student-athletes a pathway to continue competing at the community college level.
“As an institution, we value investing in our students by creating new avenues and opportunities that support their personal growth and development,” he continued. “We are excited about the addition of volleyball and look forward to the positive impact it will have on our student-athletes and Coahoma Community College for years to come.”
Reid noted that the inaugural team will play a pivotal role in shaping the identity of the program.
“This is a rare opportunity for student-athletes to make history at Coahoma Community College,” she said. “Members of the inaugural team will build the foundation, establish the culture, and set the standard while leaving a lasting legacy for Tiger Volleyball.”
The launch of Coahoma Tigers Volleyball underscores the College’s continued investment in creating a dynamic, student-centered environment where academic and athletic success go hand in hand.
More information regarding the Coahoma Tigers Volleyball program will be released by the Athletics Department in the coming months.
