(Clarksdale, Miss.) – Coahoma Community College collaborated with AT&T Mississippi and Digitunity on Wednesday, April 29, to distribute free laptops to students and residents during a launch event at Safe House, working to close the regional digital divide.

The distribution program targets technology gaps across the college’s five-county service area, which includes Bolivar, Coahoma, Quitman, Tallahatchie, and Tunica counties. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, nearly 20% of Mississippi households lack a computer at home.

In the rural Mississippi Delta, device access rates are frequently lower, creating significant barriers to remote education and workforce development.

During the event, participants received their devices and assistance with initial setup. The distribution supports ongoing institutional efforts to ensure students and families have the technology required to complete coursework, apply for jobs, and navigate an increasingly digital landscape.

“AT&T is proud to collaborate with Coahoma Community College to help level the playing field for local students,” said Mike Walker, vice president of AT&T Mississippi. “Connectivity is vital for students, and we’re glad we can provide these resources to those who need them most.”

The initiative provides critical hardware that empowers recipients to pursue academic and professional advancement without the limitations of device scarcity.

“Digitunity is honored to collaborate with [collaborators] like Coahoma Community College and AT&T who understand that computer ownership isn't just about technology — it's about opening doors and expanding what's possible for students and their communities,” said Scot Henley, executive director of Digitunity. “Coahoma is leading the way in ensuring Mississippi students have the laptops they need to succeed in their education and careers. Your commitment to removing barriers and creating opportunity is making a real difference for students and families across the Delta.”
