Selina Reid honored by Blue Mountain Christian University for leadership, service and professional impact

(Blue Mountain, Mississippi) – The Director of Athletics Selina Reid received the 2026 Johnnie Armstrong Alumni Award on June 6, 2026. The award was presented during Blue Mountain Christian University’s Alumni Association Awards Luncheon in Blue Mountain, Miss. The award recognizes Reid's professional accomplishments, leadership and service. Former Blue Mountain women's basketball coach Jack Moser nominated Reid, who attended the institution from 1994 to 1998 on a full basketball scholarship while studying biology and chemistry with a minor in physical education.
“To receive an award bearing the name of Dr. Johnnie Mae ‘Miss Johnnie’ Armstrong - a woman whose life exemplified faith, leadership, service and excellence - is one of the greatest honors of my career and a distinction I will cherish for a lifetime,” Reid said. Armstrong served Blue Mountain for more than six decades as an educator, athletic administrator and servant leader. She organized the college's first intramural sports programs, helped expand intercollegiate athletics, served as its first athletic director and guided the institution into membership in the NAIA. Her legacy is recognized through the Johnnie Armstrong Gallery and the basketball court bearing her name in Tyler Gymnasium.
Reid said the recognition was especially meaningful because Armstrong served as a mentor and role model during her college years. Reid also credited Moser and her high school girls' basketball coach, Charlette Bain Foster, with helping her pursue her academic and athletic goals at Blue Mountain. After graduating from Blue Mountain College, Reid earned a Bachelor of Science in human performance with a concentration in athletic training from the University of Tennessee at Martin and a Master of Education in health, physical education and recreation from Delta State University.
At Coahoma Community College, Reid has served as the institution's first athletic trainer, first assistant athletic director and first female director of athletics. She currently serves as director of athletics, department chair of health, physical education and recreation, and athletic trainer. “This award represents not only my accomplishments but also the countless individuals who encouraged, mentored, supported and prayed for me throughout my life,” Reid said. “Their influence and belief in me helped make this moment possible.”
Selina Reid also gave praise to President Dr. Valmadge T. Towner for the opportunity to serve as the college's first female director of athletics and Dr. Rolonda Brown for the opportunity to serve as department chair. She said those roles have allowed her to continue the values Armstrong modeled through faith, education, mentorship, leadership and service. Founded in 1873, Blue Mountain became fully coeducational in 2005 and adopted the name Blue Mountain Christian University in 2022. The institution now offers 18 varsity sports, compared with two intercollegiate sports during Reid's enrollment. Reid said the honor also carries a responsibility to invest in others, lead with integrity and use one's gifts in service to God and the community.
