Position Description:(primary functions)
The MIBEST Instructor is responsible for providing high-quality instruction, student support, and career navigation services to Adult Education (AE), ESL, Smart Start, and MIBEST students. This position supports student recruitment, retention, academic progress, workforce readiness, and successful transition into postsecondary education and employment while maintaining compliance with state and federal Adult Education guidelines. The MIBEST Instructor will work closely with Career and Technical Education (CTE) instructors to support all MIBEST participants and ensure students successfully transition through training, credential attainment, and employment pathways. This position will also provide instruction for the Smart Start program and assist students in developing workplace readiness and employability skills.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, Adult Education, or a related field preferred.
- Experience working with adult learners, non-traditional students, or at-risk populations preferred.
- Strong communication, organizational, problem-solving, and computer skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with college staff, students, employers, and community agencies.
- Must complete all required Mississippi Adult Education trainings, competency requirements, and professional development activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide instruction in adult education, literacy, HSE/GED preparation, ESL, workforce preparation, Smart Start Pathways, career pathways, and integrated education and training.
- Teach and facilitate Smart Start classes while preparing students for postsecondary training, workforce opportunities, and career success.
- Work hand in hand with Career and Technical Education (CTE) instructors to support MIBEST participants academically, professionally, and personally throughout their training programs.
- Utilize research-based instructional strategies, technology, and CCRS-aligned curriculum to support student learning and achievement.
- Develop lesson plans, assess student performance, monitor progress, and maintain accurate student records and data for accountability purposes.
- Recruit, orient, assess, and advise students while assisting them in establishing academic and career goals.
- Identify barriers to student success and coordinate supportive services through college and community resources.
- Promote student retention by monitoring attendance, academic performance, and student engagement.
- Assist students with college admissions, financial aid, workforce training opportunities, internships, and employment placement.
- Collaborate with Adult Education, Workforce, Career and Technical Education, and community partners to support student success and workforce development initiatives.
- Maintain accurate data entry and reporting in all required state and college systems.
- Participate in community outreach, recruitment activities, professional development, trainings, conferences, and staff meetings.
- Supervise academic assistants as assigned and perform additional duties as needed to support program operations.
