In an effort to ensure that Coahoma students gain a scholastic edge and extra support while attending the college, the institution has partnered with tutor.com to provide online tutorial services to students.

Karen Woods-Done, director of Student Engagement, is hopeful that the new services will offer students the tutorial services that they deserve and states that they came about after assessing student needs.

“We are excited to utilize the tutor.com platform. Prior to the adoption of this new platform, we recognized academic gaps and identified barriers to student success and ultimately graduation. We want to provide every opportunity to alleviate those barriers,” said Woods-Done. “This platform coupled with our hands on approach to assisting students and meeting their needs will continue to push the bar for our students and ultimately aid in their continued success.”

Tutor.com offers one-to-one learning solutions for students through educational institutions such as colleges, universities, K-12 schools, public and state libraries, and corporations for employee benefits and workforce development.

Patrick Johnson, coordinator of Tutorial Services, completed the groundwork with this new partnership. He notes that online tutorial services are nothing new on the Coahoma campus.

“Online tutoring has been available to our students for years now, but during these current times, I believe that it should be a highlight,” said Johnson. “With the current shift in the educational landscape, I was interested in researching other platforms that offer tutorial services. I also talked to personnel at other colleges to see what types of online software they were using. After researching, we decided that tutor.com would be great for our students here at CCC.”

The company touts its high availability of services. Students facing demanding schedules, extracurricular commitments, and family obligations can get the help they need, when they need it —outside of class, faculty office hours and when other on-campus services are closed.

The platform’s Classroom features a chat interface and an interactive Whiteboard, both of which can be used by both the tutor and student to communicate. Users also have the option of communicating via a Voice feature within the session.

“I am looking forward to not only assisting students but also receiving support from faculty and staff in pushing this platform and making sure that students are aware and utilize this tool,” said Johnson.

Tutor.com connects learners with qualified, expert tutors online, on-demand, 24/7/361. They provide tutoring services in more than 200 academic subjects and test preparation areas in an engaging and uplifting learning environment.

Because of this, Johnson sees these opportunities as a value-add to the Coahoma student experience.

“The biggest benefit of choosing tutor.com is accessibility. Tutors are accessible 24/7, with the exception of some holidays. They also offer over assistance with 250 subjects,” said Johnson. “These subjects are not only limited to academics but also health sciences as well as career & technical fields.”

Tutor.com’s philosophy is that when a learner needs help, the best way to get it is right away from an experienced expert. These individuals are online 24/7, ready to assist. Their mission is to help every learner first realize and then reach their full potential.

Johnson says that the new features that the platform will offer are next-level, noting that students will benefit from a hands on approach in every tutoring session.

“This platform provides live-on-demand 1-on-1 tutors that will connect to you within 1 minute or less. Sessions can also be recorded just in case students need to go back and review what was discussed during the session,” added Johnson. “Another cool feature is that they have a paper drop-off area where students can submit a paper for review. With this, they ask that students allow 12 hours so they can review the paper, but they are actually averaging 7 hours of turnaround time. This resource can be accessed in Canvas and is free to use for students.”

The service will be available to students beginning in the Fall 2021 semester.

“My hope is that our students utilize this great tutoring software to help eliminate some potential academic barriers and to help them matriculate to graduation,” said Johnson.
