In a recent report by Nurse.org, the Coahoma Community College Division of Health Sciences was ranked as one of the Top Ten Best Nursing Schools in Mississippi.

The website serves as a go-to source for nursing news and career resources. Helpful information is provided in a variety of categories, from the top nursing programs available to students to how to become a nurse.

The organization's methodology surrounding the rankings began with building a database of nursing programs for all degree levels and specializations across the entire U.S. and specific areas, through various means, including making several Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests.

Dean of the Division of Health Sciences, Dr. Chequitia Dixon, is proud to learn of the recent ranking and hopes to continue their efforts in support of student success.

"What an honor to be named one of the Top 10 Best Nursing Schools in Mississippi! As a community college among other larger Mississippi Institutions of higher education, we are beyond proud of this esteemed recognition," said Dixon. "This accomplishment would not have been possible without the collective effort of the faculty, staff, and students."

Composed of a variety of programs and short-term programs, CCC's Division of Health Sciences works to provide accessible, affordable, diverse, quality, and equitable educational programs and support services. The division aims to bolster and foster holistic growth in a student-centered learning environment to prepare highly trained, dedicated, and motivated healthcare professionals for the rural health community served by Coahoma Community College.

The unit offers CNA, Phlebotomy, EKG, EMT, Paramedic, Polysomnography, Respiratory Care, Practical Nursing, and LPN-RN programs, all geared toward providing next-level opportunities to its participants.

Dixon believes that Coahoma's distinctive educational delivery methods played a vital role in the unit being recognized.

"The Health Science Division at Coahoma Community College offers an engaging environment with unique classroom and clinical experiences for students to grow and excel in their perspective programs of study," Dixon explained. "Our faculty and staff include individuals who are committed to the overall success and well-being of the students we serve. Our focus on intrusive advisement and student support are attributes that set us apart from other institutions."

In the online ranking released a few weeks ago, Coahoma positioned ninth among both two-year and four-year institutions in the state.

One of the division's top priorities is to prepare the students with the skills, knowledge, and attitudes required to enter the healthcare workforce as a healthcare professional in the job market or transfer to a college or university. This charge is a mission that Dixon takes to heart.

She added that her unit is constantly working to advance their skills and work to better

"The Associate Degree Nursing and Practical Nursing faculty are currently engaged in professional development to prepare students and faculty for the upcoming Next Generation NCLEX in April 2023. The NCLEX is the licensure examination required for nurses," Dixon shared.
