Choir 23

This event is scheduled on Monday, December 11, 2023 at 7:30 p.m. and will take place at the pinnacle on campus. The Memphis Chamber Orchestra will also perform along with CCC group as an added element to this event. High school choirs across the MS Delta will take the stage at the concert.

Dr. Kelvin Towners, choir director and Department of Music chairperson, says that this concert has been held in the past 18 years and the very first concert he produced dates back to 2002.

During this time of the academic year, this event can be very challenging to prepare for. Students have had major performances during this semester such as the Southern Invitational Choral Conference held at the University of Southern Mississippi.

However, students had to turn the page and set the literature to the side when preparing for this concert by practicing in two sessions per day and studying in between sessions.

Towers shares that events like this are essential for not only CCC but also the community during holiday season. CCC World Renowned Choir has something up their sleeve for the community enjoyment during the concert.

“The community should look forward to hearing a variety of selections sung in classical, pop, and gospel music traditions,” said Towers. “Our choir will be accompanied by the Memphis Chamber Orchestra. There will be something for every musical taste.”

This event provides CCC students an opportunity to display their musicianship in front of one of the largest audiences of the year. Students also have the opportunity to perform with professional orchestra.

Like most HBCUs, Coahoma is proud of fostering an atmosphere that creates a sense of community, belonging, and togetherness. The choir, a close-knit group, is no different. The bonds shared between students and directors are ones that Towers holds dear.

The annual Christmas concert is a tradition that has been rousing the Clarksdale community for nearly two decades.

The event is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early for optimal seating. No ticket is required to attend.
