The College has partnered with the Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation to offer students free group therapy sessions. BLHF is a nonprofit founded by actress Taraji Henson in 2018. Henson’s organization, named for her late father, whose service in the Vietnam War affected his mental health, seeks to dissolve stigmas surrounding mental health.

Licensed counselor LaShonna Fletcher of Creative Sisters Counseling, LLC out of Clinton, Mississippi, has been assigned to lead chats with Coahoma Community College students. The first of multiple sessions was held on March 18, 2021. Fletcher has an affinity for nurturing clients in a manner that produces a positive attitude toward life. She magnifies details that will, through conversation, cause immediate change and permanent transformation.

BLHF has teamed up with similar nonprofits providing programs that seek to bring awareness to the satisfying results that come from setting aside time for mental health wellness. The organization is focusing mainly on the increased need for assurance in young individuals during the pandemic. Professional oversight in a supportive peer space would benefit them.

Coordinator of Counseling Services Renee Hall welcomes the added service as college students are having to survive challenging times. “No one should suffer in silence, so it is truly an honor to have her as an additional resource for our campus,” said Hall.

“Just as physical fitness helps our bodies to stay strong, mental fitness helps us to achieve and sustain a state of good mental health.”

One out of every five Americans experiences mental illness.

Joining the fight in combating recidivism, the Henson Foundation also backs organizations offering released offenders mental health support.
