(Clarksdale, Mississippi) — Coahoma Community College’s Division of Health Sciences recently welcomed high school
students from across the Mississippi Delta for its annual High School Day Camp, an exciting and immersive experience that introduced future
scholars to the many career pathways available in healthcare.
The camp kicked off with a warm reception led by Dr. Chequitia Dixon, Dean of Health
Sciences, alongside faculty and staff from each health program. Students were provided
with an overview of the division’s offerings, heard personal insights from instructors,
and gained a solid understanding of what it takes to succeed in a healthcare-related
field.
“This camp is a unique way to introduce students to the incredible impact they can have in the healthcare field,” said Dr. Chequitia Dixon, Dean of Health Sciences. “We want to empower them with knowledge and inspire them to see healthcare not just as a job, but as a meaningful way to serve their communities. Our goal is to help them visualize a future where they’re making a real difference.”
Throughout the day, students explored CCC’s modern simulation labs and classrooms and participated in hands-on activities within the following programs:
- Paramedic Technology
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Respiratory Care
- Practical Nursing
- Polysomnography (Sleep Technology)
Students practiced vital signs, engaged in CPR simulations, learned about respiratory
equipment, and observed demonstrations that highlighted the real-world skills used
in patient care. The interactive approach gave them a glimpse into the rigor, excitement,
and purpose that come with healthcare training.
Aneika Moore, Student Navigator for the Division of Health Sciences, remained with the students throughout the entire experience, guiding them from activity to activity and answering questions about admissions and student life.
“It was inspiring to see so many students excited about their future,” said Moore. “This camp gave them the chance to ask questions, see what the programs are really like, and imagine themselves in those roles. I believe several of them left here today with a clearer vision for their path forward.”
The High School Day Camp reflects Coahoma’s mission to increase access to education and strengthen the local healthcare workforce. By engaging high school students early, the college is fostering a new generation of health professionals equipped with the skills and passion to serve their communities.
