(Clarksdale, Mississippi) – Coahoma Community College (CCC) has announced a groundbreaking partnership with the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) to deliver workforce development training programs for incarcerated individuals preparing to reenter society. This collaboration aligns with CCC’s mission to transform lives through education and empower underserved populations with the tools necessary to achieve economic stability and personal growth.
Under the Memorandum of Agreement, CCC will provide two key programs at MDOC-designated facilities: Industrial Lift Training and the SMART START Course. The Industrial Lift Training program offers participants certified instruction in industrial lift operations, equipping them with hands-on technical skills aligned with current industry standards. Training will be facilitated by CCC’s qualified instructors, who will ensure sessions are conducted safely and effectively. The program also includes curriculum development, program evaluation using measurable performance indicators, and issuance of certifications to qualifying participants.
The SMART START Course is a workforce readiness program designed to build essential soft skills, strengthen basic academic competencies, and assist with career planning. The course will prepare participants to navigate today’s workforce demands confidently while encouraging self-sufficiency upon release. CCC will deliver all instructional materials, qualified training staff, and comprehensive program oversight to ensure high-quality implementation.
“This partnership reflects our ongoing commitment to creating educational pathways for all individuals, regardless of their current circumstances,” said Dr. Valmadge Towner, President of Coahoma Community College. “At Coahoma, we believe that education is a fundamental driver of change. By equipping incarcerated individuals with employable skills and essential life competencies, we empower them to return to their communities with dignity, purpose, and the confidence to pursue productive futures.”
Through this collaboration:
- CCC will provide all instructional personnel, curriculum, and materials necessary for both programs; ensure trainers are certified and experienced; administer assessments and evaluations to measure participant progress; and maintain records of attendance, completion, and certifications.
- MDOC will identify eligible participants for both programs, provide accessible and secure training spaces, support CCC staff with coordination and security, facilitate access to necessary equipment, and process program payments upon receipt of invoices.
The Memorandum of Agreement will remain in effect for one year, with opportunities for renewal upon mutual agreement by both parties. CCC and MDOC are committed to exploring additional educational and workforce development pathways in the future to expand opportunities for incarcerated individuals statewide.
This initiative demonstrates Coahoma Community College’s dedication to supporting reentry efforts, reducing recidivism, and fostering stronger communities through education, training, and rehabilitation-focused partnerships.
