sum(Clarksdale, Mississippi) — The Student Government Association (SGA) recently represented the institution at the Annual National Association of Student Affairs Professionals (NASAP) Student Leadership Institute (SLI), hosted at Claflin University in Orangeburg, South Carolina. This six-day intensive program brings together student leaders from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the country for an experience focused on professional growth, character development, and leadership training.

NASAP SLI is nationally recognized for fostering a community of empowered, forward-thinking student leaders. Through a comprehensive series of workshops, breakout sessions, and team activities, participants sharpen critical thinking skills, enhance their leadership competencies, and engage in collaborative problem-solving. A major highlight of the conference is a capstone group project, where students work in teams to address real-world issues and present strategic solutions at the close of the institute.

Throughout the week, Coahoma’s student leaders have immersed themselves in sessions led by distinguished professionals and thought leaders representing higher education, business, public service, and nonprofit sectors. These sessions are designed not only to develop technical leadership skills but also to inspire personal growth and self-awareness. From exploring ethical leadership to learning effective communication strategies, the institute challenges students to rise to the occasion as agents of change on their campuses and in their communities.sga

Participants explored a wide range of topics critical to effective student leadership, including organizational management, communication strategies, budgeting, campus engagement, community service, and the historical and cultural context of HBCU leadership. From understanding the structure and purpose of student government to developing conflict resolution and team-building skills, the sessions were designed to equip students with both the knowledge and confidence to lead effective.

One of the most powerful aspects of NASAP SLI is the opportunity for peer networking. Coahoma’s students have spent the week exchanging ideas, experiences, and aspirations with their counterparts from other HBCUs. The relationships forged at NASAP often extend far beyond the conference, creating a national network of young leaders committed to service and excellence.

This year, Coahoma Community College is proudly represented by:

  • Ta'Moria Shannon, SGA President
  • Ja'Mikal Reed, 19th Mister Coahoma Community College
  • Zariah Hamidou, 68th Miss Coahoma Community College
  • Jamison Hicks, Student Activities Chair
  • Aaliyah Thompson, Multimedia Specialist
  • Darron Griffin Jr., Treasurer

Guiding the students throughout the institute are SGA Advisors Christopher Dixon and Nicole Ross of Coahoma’s Office of Student Engagement. Their mentorship and commitment continue to play a vital role in shaping the student experience and supporting student development beyond the classroom.

“This experience is nothing short of transformative,” said Nicole Ross, Assistant Director of Student Engagement/SGA Advisor. “It’s incredible to witness our students step outside of their comfort zones, take initiative, and truly embrace what it means to be a leader. NASAP SLI equips them with not only practical skills but also a deeper sense of purpose and confidence that will benefit them long after they leave Coahoma.”

Karen Woods-Done, Director of Student Engagement, emphasized the value of this experience: “Our goal is to nurture well-rounded student leaders who are informed, intentional, and inspired. NASAP SLI exposes our students to the core principles of leadership while also allowing them to connect with their peers and reflect on what kind of leaders they want to become. It’s an investment that continues to yield long-term growth.”

The annual participation in NASAP SLI reflects Coahoma Community College’s enduring commitment to student leadership and empowerment. By investing in transformative experiences like NASAP, the college ensures that its students are well-equipped to lead with integrity, confidence, and purpose—on campus and beyond.
